Considerations when relocating for work

It happens. You have to move because businesses grow, move, and change. Perhaps you're moving for a better position with more pay. You’ll likely want to move to a locality with a low cost of living, and cost of housing is the biggest expense. Regardless of specifics and where you're moving for your job, it's vital that you stay organized and take steps before the move to ease what can be a burden.

Have a Relocation Checklist

A great starting resource is Move.org. This site provides a moving checklist with all the major tasks you need to complete. It can be difficult to know, or even remember all the things that need done. If you’re new to the process, you'll be more likely to skip important details and make mistakes. It’s easy to miss a deadline or forget to submit necessary paperwork. It can be difficult to juggle responsibilities and make sure everything gets done on time.

An underrated option is to work with professional movers. It can take a lot of the pain (physical and mental) out of moving. If you’re not sure where to look, search online to find a list of local movers that can help you. You can compare and read reviews to find out what services are offered in order to make the best decision for you during your move.

Make Finding the Right Home a Priority

Even if you don't plan on making this your forever home, you never know how long you will stay. Make sure it’s a place that can meet your needs. For instance, if you need a home office, make sure the house you choose has an extra bedroom, space in the basement, or somewhere you can dedicate to work.

Location, location, location. If you have children, American Family Insurance suggests researching the school district. On the other hand, consider a location that has amenities for every member of your family, such as a park, shopping, restaurants, gyms, and travel times.

Stay Organized

Make sure you stay organized throughout this entire process. That means you should have to-do lists, including daily ones. It also means you’re going to have to manage your time as well. Having a plan and sticking to it is critical. Set reminders in your phone, get a physical calendar you can hang and look at frequently. Include tasks related to work, moving, and your everyday life.

Start packing boxes as soon as you can so you're not waiting until the last minute. Decorations are perfect for early packing. All non-essentials can be packed even a month early. Move from decorations to off-season clothing, storage items, garage stuff and other items you don’t use regularly. Leave the kitchen and bathrooms until the end. Since you won't feel rushed, you'll be able to stay organized.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Creating an overall to-do list and daily lists to stay organized and doing research about the city will help make life a little bit easier as you move. Once you’ve got the details ironed out, moving can be an exciting new adventure! Embrace the change and look forward to all the good things!
